The first game of 2016 can now be written in the books! Tonight I managed to finish Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga with a final play time of 18:03:15. From where we last left off, I was just a mere 2 hours away from finishing the game. Once I got through Joke's End I decided to just power through the rest of the game.

Overall the game had a very strong showing. There were a lot of things I liked about the game – the dialogue, the battle system, the puzzles, the game mechanics. What AlphaDream did was great. They brought over some game mechanics (in particular the battle system) from Super Mario RPG (SNES) and Paper Mario (N64) and implemented it well with the 2 party system. I am a huge fan of the action commands because it provides challenge during the battles.

The association of a button to a Mario Brother was simple, but yet complex at the same time. I know that doesn't really make sense, but let me explain. It's simple in a sense that one button controls Mario and the other controls Luigi. That way all you need to do is press one button in order to move that character in battle. It's complex because you need to really be on top of your toes during battle and really pay attention to the enemies as they attack. They give off little clues to who they will be attacking during battle. Not only that, many of the enemies have different attacks so you really have to pay attention to what attack they are using. In other words, the battles were fun.

Also in battle they added Bros Attacks in which the Mario Bros would combine to perform an attack. This too required good timing and attentiveness. The game has quite a few attacks and also provides challenge as well. For one you can spend more BP (Bro Points) in order to make the move easier by allowing the game to give you prompts as to when to hit the button. On the other hand, you can go cheap on the attack and use a minimal amount of BP, but it makes the move harder to execute. Like I said earlier, the battle system was fun.

Another thing that I loved was the characters and dialogue. The Beanbean Kingdom served as a great setting for this adventure. They did a good job in giving this area life. All the supporting characters are great – even the main baddies in the game (Cackletta and Fawful). Download tekken 3 pc game for windows 7. The only character I was not very fond of was Prince Peasley. For some reason I hated this little toss of the hair and shine. Other than that the game provided some great moments and funny dialogue. It was also nice to see the Koopa Kids in this game although they didn't have any dialogue at all.

Now there is one thing that did hamper my enjoyment of the game and it's that I felt this game had some unnecessary padding. The searching of the Beanstar Pieces I felt dragged on a bit. In fact I felt that the last 3rd of the game was quite a drag. Bowser's Castle especially was a long drawn out boss rush with puzzle solving in between. I mean I enjoyed the puzzles in this game, but still felt the game lost momentum after the Beanstar was retrieved the first time. This is basically my only real knock on the game.

Other than that, this game was very enjoyable. I'm giving this game an 8/10. I was going back and forth between 8 and 9, but felt that 8 was fair. A good game by my standards, but didn't really wow me, I think the last 3rd of the game kind of affected my score in a way. Well, at least I can cross this game off the backlog!
